24th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 October 1963. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #9557, ##9550-B, and #9788. All were built by EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9557 is an EF-15 built in 1948. #9550-B is an EH-15 built in 1948. #9778 is an EF-15A built in 1951. They are about to pass under the 24th Street Bridge with 154 empty hopper cars on their way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. |

Tipton. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Tipton, Pennsylvania, on 11 April 1964. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8624, two unidentified EMD "B" units, and engine #9788. #8624 is an AS-18M built by the American Locomotive Company in 1956 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. #9788 is an EF-15A built by EMD in 1951 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. They are pulling a 63-car westbound mixed-cargo freight train along with caboose #477228. |

Gallitzin. Here is an original photo that I took at the tunnels under Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, on 13 September 1964. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9785, #9788, #7069, and #8843. #9785 and #9788 are EF-15A's built by EMD in February of 1951 and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #7069 is an EFS-17M built by GM-EMD in October of 1956 and rated at 1,750 horsepower. #8843 is an AS-16MS built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. In this context, they're emerging from the eastern portal of the New Portage Tunnel with a 108-car coal train on their way down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to the Eastbound Receiving Yard in Altoona. The N-8 cabin car is #478171. |
